Basement floods have many causes, from foundation damage to excess groundwater. However, some basement flooding can be caused by an unexpected source: your gutters. Proper gutter care and maintenance can make a huge difference in protecting your basement and entire home.
How Gutters Work
We often forget that gutters are there because they fade into the background. However, gutters are critical to preserving your home.
Gutters are troughs installed along the edges of your roof to collect rainwater. These troughs are part of a larger system that channels rainwater away from your home. The horizontal gutters empty into vertical downspouts so that water flows down and away from your property rather than falling straight off the roof and saturating the ground directly outside your foundation.
Often, downspouts connect to another component at ground level—either an aboveground extender or an underground drainpipe—to help water move even further away from the building. This additional channel can be particularly helpful if the surrounding land is mostly flat.
Why Gutters Are Critical
So, why are gutters such a big deal? Isn’t it normal for rain to fall and soak into the ground?
In general, yes. However, if rainwater runs off your roof and lands directly next to your house, it puts a lot of stress on that area, especially when it happens repeatedly.
Without gutters, the water that would have soaked into the ground your house sits on gets concentrated around the edges. This means that, without intervention, the soil directly around your home can easily become oversaturated, potentially damaging your foundation.
Hydrostatic pressure (the pressure of the outside water pushing on the foundation) can, over time, cause foundation cracks. Water follows the path of least resistance, so it will flow into these cracks, causing them to worsen and lead to:
- Basement leaks
- Basement flooding
- Water damage
- Mold and mildew issues
Additionally, water landing all around your home will erode the soil, making the problem even worse. With less soil to absorb rainwater, the water will saturate the remaining soil even more quickly, leading to greater foundation damage.
Common Gutter Issues
When your gutters are working properly, they keep water from collecting around your home’s perimeter. When you have a gutter problem, though, basement flooding and water damage are much more likely.
Clogged Gutters
While gutters are designed to collect rainwater, they can also easily collect other things. If not cleaned out regularly, gutters tend to accumulate debris, including:
- Leaves
- Twigs
- Moss
- Grit
Debris can lodge in the gutter troughs, downspouts, and the joints between them, clogging the system and impeding water flow. Even a small clog can cause major problems.
When any part of the gutter system is clogged, the gutters are at risk of overflowing, especially during heavy rainfall. When this happens, a deluge of water is deposited directly outside your foundation instead of flowing away from your home. As previously discussed, excess water around your foundation can have dire consequences.
Inadequate Downspouts
Even if your gutter system is clear of clogs, it can still fail for other reasons, such as issues with your downspouts. You may have a gutter problem if your downspouts are too small, too few, or too short.
- Downspout size: Downspouts need to handle the volume of water collected by the surrounding gutters. If they’re not big enough, water will overflow and land right next to your home. If you have gutter issues or basement flooding, it could be due to inadequate downspout size.
- Downspout number: Typically, the rule of thumb is to have a vertical downspout every 20 feet along the horizontal gutter line. This guideline helps ensure that water collected in the gutter troughs can exit quickly. If there aren’t enough downspouts, gutters are at risk of overflowing during heavy rainfall.
- Downspout length: At minimum, downspouts should channel water at least 4–6 feet away from your home. If the land around your home is graded (i.e., slanted away from the building), the downspouts might accomplish this without help. However, you may need to lengthen the downspout at ground level via an aboveground extender or an underground drainage pipe. This helps move water far enough that it won’t immediately impact your foundation.
Improper Drainage
While gutters often appear to run parallel to the roof edge, they should actually be installed on a slight downward slope, pointed towards the nearest drainpipe. This slight angle allows gravity to guide collected water down and into the drainpipe so it can flow away from your home. If gutters are installed without this slope, the whole drainage process is compromised.
If gutters are damaged or clogged, the gutter’s slope can also be affected. Debris and pooled water can quickly accumulate in a section of the gutter, adding excess weight that can pull it out of proper alignment.
When gutters don’t drain correctly, they’re apt to overflow, causing the exact damage they should be preventing. That’s why proper gutter installation and maintenance are critical.
Gutter Care is Basement Care
While your gutters may be far from your basement, they are a key factor in protecting your basement from flooding, leaks, and water damage. To properly care for your basement, it’s critical to maintain your gutters. You should:
- Clean and inspect gutters regularly
- Fix damage promptly
- Trim trees near your home to limit debris accumulation
